With Personal Art Coaching, One Critique Can Make the Difference
The Challenge

The Reference Inspiration Pat started with a classic living room snapshot. The goal was to take this adorable, happy dog out of the cluttered background and remove that pink harness to let her natural beauty shine. While the photo is a great reference for the dog’s joyful expression, translating a "couch photo" into a formal portrait requires us to invent a brand-new environment that complements the fur tones.
The Coaching Phase

Navigating the Background In this first stage, Pat was wrestling with where to place our furry friend. You can see the struggle with the background—trying a wooded path that felt a bit distracting. We talked about how to handle the composition, even though she felt she "broke the rules" by not centering the dog. This is where the Personal Art Coaching really kicks in—finding a way to make the dog the star of the show without the background competing for attention.
The Final Result

A Glowing Success Look at that transformation! After our video coaching session, Pat moved away from the literal "scenery" and opted for a beautiful, soft mottled background. By using warm, atmospheric tones that echo the colors in the fur, the dog now practically leaps off the canvas. She successfully removed the harness and captured that brilliant "panting smile," proving that even if you think you’ve "broken rules," a little adjustment in lighting and color harmony makes for a stunning portrait.
From Concept to Canvas

It is such a joy to see a student take a leap of faith and really "lean into" the process! Michael sent in his first version (Image 1) for some Personal Art Coaching (PAC) because he felt something wasn't quite clicking with his winter woods
A PAC Transformation with Michael F.

Michael really did his homework, experimenting with orange, yellow, and even sky blue in the snow before settling on a sophisticated, transparent white wash to give just a hint of cool blue

Jette S. Earns the Metcalf Master Study Badge!

She took on the challenge of a master study, recreating a classic piece by Metcalf that I taught in one of our Academy tutorials. As you can see by using our nifty new before-and-after slider—a fun new feature the Tech Bear and I added so you can really see the transformation—Jette’s second pass is just marvelous. By following the coaching and refining her values and composition, her work now beautifully aligns with Metcalf’s original vision. Because of this fantastic progress, I am so proud to officially award her the Metcalf Master Study Badge! It’s not just about the badge, though; it’s about that "lightbulb moment" where the paint finally does what you want it to do. Way to go, Jette!
